The Columbia River Gorge Natural Scenic Area
Just a short 30-minute, drive from downtown Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA, the Gorge contains an unparalleled combination of scenery, geology, plants, wildlife, recreation and rich cultural history. Beauty abounds as the Gorge begins in the west with old growth forests and transitions in only 40 miles into bunchgrass prairies in the east stunning waterfalls over imposing basalt walls throughout.
The area has been a major center of fishing and trade for Native Americans for well over 10,000 years, up to the present day. Members of Celilo Village, an unincorporated Native American community, continue to fish at the site of the inundated Celilo Falls.

Comments:
~Love this place!  Best in Spring when Rhododendrons are in bloom, but fun all year round.  Some weekdays have free admission.  Fun to see wildlife, kids enjoy feeding the ducks.  Have to buy special feed at front gate or at market down the street.  Not expensive.  Take camera, great place for pictures.

~A fun place for a free outing.  My kids (ages 2-5) call this "the different zoo."  The hands on exhibits make a visit a real treat!  They  loved petting the beaver pelts, identifying different kinds of animal poop, and looking at the water foul from the large viewing area. The paths are gravel and great fun to run and explore even in gray weather.   Kym Mom of 3 (2, 3, 5)

~We have been here several times and love it every time.  It is a great place in any season.  The kids are really fascinated by the waterfalls, boardwalks through the pond, and the patterns in the Zen garden.

~All of the waterfalls along the Columbia River highway are beautiful and interesting, each in their own unique way.  Multnomah Falls is especially fun because you can hike up to the bridge right in front of the falls and feel the spray on your face.        Beaverton Mom of 2

~You can't go to this place just once.  It is a huge and interesting garden.  Our kids loved looking for fish and frogs in the pond, but also enjoyed the endless paths and colorful flowers.        Beaverton Mom of 2

~We went on the painted turtle walk. It was wonderful. Binoculars are provided along with a guide. It is a nice slow paced walk on mostly level ground. You will always find the turtles. - KB, Portland Mom of 5
