~Tears of Joy does fabulous puppet theater!  They do interesting stories and use all kinds of puppetry.
We have had season tickets for 3 years and our kids love every show and really enjoy the after-the-show Q&A
session.

~ I am so excited for Tears of Joy's upcoming production! I recently saw their new
poster, and their adorable cat puppets look great! My children and I regularly go to
their productions and we are always amazed by their artistic portrayal of some of my
favorite cultural stories. Plus, Tears of Joy Artist tour to schools throughout the
region, teaching and performing! how great is that!  Tears of Joy Puppet Theatre
not only produces amazing puppet theatre, but they also
conduct amazing theatre classes. Awesome Resident Artists regularly visit schools
throughout Oregon, performing their plays and conducting week long residencies with
the kiddos. Dont miss their extra fun Puppet Summer camp! Kids get to explore mask
making, circus fun, puppet making and manipulation, theatrical games. Plus they
perform on the beautiful Winningstad Theatre stage!

~CYT is an after school theatre arts program for kids ages 6-19. We provide classes in acting, dance, voice and other theatre skills. Each session we produce 3 Broadway musical productions that the children can audition for. This season we have done, "Annie","High School Musical" along with many others. During the summer we have several day camps and teen camps. CYT is a national organization that creates high quality theatre opportunities for kids of all ages.

We discovered CYT after attending one of their plays in Vancouver "Anne of Green
Gables".  They are great with the kids teaching them many different aspects to
acting from stage manager to backstage and lights, they do it all! CYT meets after
school on Tuesdays at a local church and usaully have three shows a year! They have
four locations now: Vancouver, Vancouver East (Washugal), Portland East (Gresham),
Portland West (Beaverton). They have great plays for a reasonable cost, Classes,
Summer camps, and more.

~You can take your kid(s) to the theater. It's not kids movies per se, its just movies that we can see and take out babies etc...

~
I just wanted to share what a great experience my daughter recently had
participating in NW Youth  Theater.
My daughter has enjoyed performing in dance recitals, so I thought she might enjoy
doing musical dance theater.  I have fond memories myself of doing The Sound of
Music in 2nd grade and The Wizard of Oz in 6th grade at my elementary school, and I
have mourned the loss of theater programs at the elementary school level.  I was
thrilled when I learned that NW Youth Theater was starting up again so close to
home.  I particularly liked this quote on their website:
”Children's Theatre is a great educational feature. The time ought to come when a
child's theatre will be a part of every public school in the land.”
Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain)
Whenever I had asked my daughter about acting classes, she was always very hesitant
which surprised me because of her love for dance performing.  She expressed that she
was very nervous about having to memorize and deliver speaking lines.  I encouraged
her to just try the NW Youth Theater to see if she liked it or not.  We just
finished the first session of ten weeks, and she can’t wait to do it again!
Here is what I like about the program as a parent:
•        It’s affordable at only $10.00 a session approximately (if all paid up front)
which is comparable to the cost of Hillsboro Parks and Recreation classes.
•        The children don’t have to audition for parts, so they can participate without
feeling left out or feeling like they don’t have a talent for musical theater.
•        They can develop confidence in expressing themselves in front of others in a fun,
supportive, and creative environment.  Many children have the opportunity to have a
speaking part.
•        It gives them a chance to explore their abilities and talents that they might not
have known they had.
•        They meet other children from a young age in the community who might share common
interests with them.
•        The co-directors both worked with the children with love, enthusiasm and
professionalism.
•        The content of the shows chosen are very child appropriate.
•        And one of the parts I liked best is that the performance was truly enjoyable to
watch yet short enough (half an hour) to make it still enjoyable to watch!

~The plays are wonderful - especially if you follow their age guidelines.  A trip to their office is worthwhile when buying tickets.  The staff maintains a seating chart so you can pick the seats you want without taking someone else's idea of "best available".  If you have an Entertainment book remember to use the coupon - it makes for a great outing at a decent price.

~Many shows are performed in a style called Maraku which uses marionettes in the Japanese Bunraku tradition, where the puppeteers appear on stage costumed in black, the puppet's shadows. This technique allows interaction with the audience.  Email them for show times.
